ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT: Childhood is a period of life when the human being is constantly going through progressive steps of psychosocial, physical, and mental development. The quality of hygiene habits of family members will be reflected on the characteristics and attitudes of children, which significantly increases the responsibility of the family in oral hygiene education. The present study aimed to observe the influence of maternal satisfaction with the dentist in children's oral care. This is a cross-sectional design, which sample included 100 mothers from a city in Southern Brazil. From a questionnaire prepared for this purpose and adapted from previous research, the mothers were interviewed from January to July 2015. The results presented showed that most mothers work outside the home (46.4 %) but monitor their children during toothbrushing (50.7 %). For most mothers, the dentist represents satisfaction (37.1 %) and the main reason for seeking the dentist is oral health (44.3 %). It was found that mothers who encourage their children to use dental floss and monitor them during toothbrushing are the mothers who feel satisfied with the dentist (P < 0.05). In addition, mothers know that caries is a disease and its occurrence is related to diet habits, however, they add chocolate milk and sugar to their children's bottle. Thus, it was concluded that satisfaction with the dentist influences mothers on oral hygiene habits adopted by their children regarding the use of dental floss and toothbrushing monitoring.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT Objective: To verify the profile of elderly followed up by Family Health Strategy teams and the influence of self-reported chronic diseases on demographic variables, describing self-perception and satisfaction with quality of health. Methods: This is a cross-sectional population- based study carried out with 301 elderly residents in two areas of a city in southern Brazil. Data were collected through a questionnaire based on the Health, Well-Being, and Aging Study adapted by researchers, and a playful scale to assess satisfaction with health. For the statistical analysis, the χ2 test was used (p<0.05). Results: Regarding cognitive assessment, the majority was classified as independent (86.4%), not requiring caregiver assistance to answer the questionnaire. The population was predominantly female (55.8%), White (64.8%), married (51.2%), and catholic (82.1%). A total of 47.5% considered their current health status as regular. Regarding satisfaction with health, 72.4% were happy, even reporting having at least one chronic health problem (58.5%). Conclusion: The presence of chronic diseases was reported by most respondents, and the practice of self-medication is significantly more frequent among the aged. Nevertheless, the degree of satisfaction with their health status was predominantly positive, both related to the previous year and compared to others of the same age.

ABSTRACT

This study assessed the perception of caregivers on oral health of institutionalized impaired elderly, and the care provided for them in oral hygiene and prosthetic rehabilitation. A descriptive observational study was developed with caregivers of 32 institutionalized impaired elderly, in the state of Sergipe, Brazil. Data collection was performed by interviewing the caregivers, researching records of the Institution, and by clinical examination of the oral cavity of the elderly during a period between the months of March and May, 2013. Data were analyzed by descriptive statistics of absolute frequency (n) and relative frequency (%). All of the elderly presented partial (50 %) or total (50 %) tooth losses, and only 28.1 % wore removable denture. The prosthetic devices and remaining teeth of the elderly were cleaned with only toothbrush and toothpaste (100 %), with different daily frequencies among caregivers and no dentist instruction. The majority of caregivers was satisfied with the oral hygiene of the elderly (75 %) and the oral hygiene method (96.9 %) used, and showed no interest in learning new methods (81.3 %). The caregivers have an inadequate perception on oral health of the elderly population investigated, and oral hygiene care provided to the elderly is precarious.

ABSTRACT

Orthodontic treatment requires ethical and legal attitudes from professionals since the first contact with the patient. Thus, this study assessed professional profile, legal obligations in provision of care, and the conduct of orthodontists in terms of litigation prevention during their professional practice. Questionnaires were emailed to 1653 Brazilian orthodontists, asking for information such as: age, gender, graduate orthodontic education, time of work in orthodontics, place of graduate education, time since graduation, and information regarding the legal criteria involved in the orthodontic treatment. Data were tabulated using absolute and relative frequencies. The chi-square test (p<0.05) was used to verify the association among nominal qualitative variables. Only 163 orthodontists participated in the study, wherein men represented 60.5% and women 39.5% of the sample. It was clear that professionals most recently graduated are the ones that mostly use the care provision contract, and the ones that mostly request teleradiographs. The female gender offered more treatment options, clarified the estimated treatment time more often, and was less involved in legal issues. On the other hand, the male gender requested cephalometry more often. Most professionals request the control radiograph, and all of them file the medical records of patients. Few professionals use the professional liability insurance. The results of the present study indicate a highly heterogeneous professional profile. The female gender dominates the field of expertise, and they seem to be more careful regarding legal obligations.

ABSTRACT

The objective of this study was to determine the epidemiological profile of women victims of violence and characterize the injuries affecting their maxillofacial region. This was an analytic study using secondary data from 470 expert reports of domestic violence involving women, collected from January 2007 to December 2011 in the Department of Dentistry of the Institute of Legal Medicine in the city of Feira de Santana, Bahia, Brazil. The majority of the examined women were Afro-caucasian (72.6 %), single (74.9%), and with mean age of 30.4 years. The buccal (51 %) and orbital (8.8 %) regions were the most affected extraoral sites. As to the oral cavity, the most affected sites were teeth (50.8 %) and the lip mucosa (35 %). In most cases the lesions against women were associated with an aggressor having a close relationship with the victim. The most prevalent lesions were edema; fracture; tooth dislocation; and bruise. These findings can subsidize the development of policies to prevent violence against women, and for public safety.
